Laser Treatment of Varicose Veins, EVLT
Below are frequently asked questions by patients about varicose vein treatment.
Q: How do I eliminate varicose veins? A: Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) is the most effective treatment for eliminating varicose veins of the legs.
Q: What is EVLT and how does the procedure work? A: First, Dr. Mando will do a comprehensive ultrasound vein mapping scan of varicose and spider veins in the leg to be treated. This allows him to identify the exact location of veins that have weakened valves which are causing the appearance of purplish-blue bulges on your skin’s surface. Next, he inserts a small IV into the vein and advances it to problem area. A very thin laser fiber is advanced inside the vein. The laser applies heat to the vein wall, causing the vein to shrink and disappear within a few weeks. From start to finish, the procedure takes an average of one hour and is covered by most insurance plans.
Q: Is the EVLT procedure painful? A: No. There is no general anesthesia, no hospitalization and no scarring from EVLT. After the procedure is done, patients are advised to wear a Class II elastic stocking for 24 hours to prevent any blood from flowing back into the vein. After treatment, patients can walk and resume normal day-to-day activities with no downtime from work or family life. Advil or Tylenol is recommended for any post-procedure soreness some patients experience.
Q: I have multiple varicose veins. Can you eliminate them all within one visit? A: During your initial treatment, we will treat the largest and most problematic vein on one leg. In most scenarios, only one ELVT procedure is necessary. However, we will schedule an additional appointment if varicose veins on both legs require treatment.
Q: What are the chances that my varicose veins will return after the procedure? A: Less than 5% of patients have a re occurrence of varicose veins after an EVLT procedure.
Q: What is Dr. Mando’s experience with varicose vein removal with the EVLT procedure? A: Dr. Mando has several years of experience in treating varicose and spider veins; each year he performs over 100 EVLT procedures.
Q: What type of results can I expect to see after having the EVLT treatment? A:Patient results may vary, but below are some examples of what to expect after having the EVLT treatment
Q: How do I eliminate spider veins? A: Sclerotherapy is the most effective treatment for targeting smaller spider veins and blood vessels.
Q: What is sclerotherapy and how does the procedure work? A: Sclerotherapy involves injecting a very fine needle filled with a sclerosing solution into the vein wall. The solution causes the vein to shrink over time and disappear. The procedure lasts an average of 20 minutes and is performed within our medical office.
Q: Is sclerotherapy painful? A: Some patients experience slight discomfort and mild cramping at the moment the solution is injected into the vein. For one to two days after the procedure, it is common to see a red patch where the needle was inserted. Some patients are itchy or see slight bruising around the treated area. However, these side effects subside within days.
